The Publication

This publication presents monthly information on sales of new motor vehicles in each state/territory in original, seasonally adjusted and trend estimated terms. The original data are sourced from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Sales data are available for passenger vehicles, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), other vehicles and total vehicles at the state/territory and national levels.

MAY 2006 KEY POINTS

Trend

Trend estimates have been in decline since reaching a peak in February 2005. The May 2006 trend estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (79,773) decreased 0.5% compared with the April 2006 estimate.

Sports utility vehicles recorded the largest decrease from April 2006 to May 2006, falling 1.1%. The trend estimate for sales of passenger vehicles decreased 0.4% over the same period and other vehicles 0.3%.

Trend estimates for passenger vehicles have been decreasing since May 2005, sports utility vehicles since October 2005 and other vehicles since September 2005.

Only three states/territories showed an increase in their monthly trend estimate from April 2006 to May 2006. They were Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia with increases of 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.9% respectively.

Seasonally adjusted

The May 2006 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (80,032) increased 0.5% compared with the April 2006 estimate.

Tasmania and Western Australia had the largest increases during this period, with 6.4% and 4.1% respectively. The Australian Capital Territory had the largest decrease of 2.0%.

Over this period, passenger vehicles increased 0.7%, other vehicles increased 0.2% and sports utility vehicles decreased 0.2%.
